Cazenovia’s wrestling team joined 10 others at Port Byron as part of Saturday’s Onondaga High School League Liberty/Patriot division championship meet. Finishing with 99 points, the Lakers took seventh place, watching as Phoenix, with 207.5 points, grabbed the top spot and Hannibal, with 167 points, finished second. Brad Lucas emerged as Cazenovia’s lone champion, at 285 pounds. With a bye straight into the semifinals, Lucas, the top seed, pinned Phoenix’s Derrick Button in 1:20 to reach the title bout, where he managed to pin Hannibal’s Robert Gage with 23 seconds left. Will Shephard, wrestling at 106 pounds, beat Nevan Rourke (Skaneateles) with a second-period fall and, in the final, pushed Phoenix’s Ryan Dolbear before taking a 2-0 defeat. At 195 pounds, Dan Phillips beat Connor Gray (Skaneateles) 9-4 to reach the championship round, but could not wrestle against Phoenix’s Will Hilliard and took a forfeit. John Nannery, beaten 5-0 by Hannibal’s Derek Hilton in the 170-pound semifinal, rebounded for a third-place finish, pinning Pat Greenfield (Skaneateles) in 1:22 and stopping Phoenix’s Tim Gandino 7-3 in the consolation bracket final. Hayden Polhamus got third place at 220 pounds with tough wins over Cooper Pitman (Skaneateles) 6-4 and Austin Wirth (Phoenix) 7-1 to win that consolation bracket. Jacob Wells (99 pounds) beat APW’s Lindsay Rollson 3-1 for fifth place. Paul McLaughlin beat Tristan Duger (Marcellus) in another 2-0 bout to have his own fifth-place finish, while Alex Nannery (145 pounds) got sixth place. Before this, Chittenango was supposed to wrestle twice, but the heavy snows early last week in Oswego County postponed last Tuesday’s meet with APW/Pulaski. It had cleared out, though, in time for Thursday night’s meet at Mexico, where the Bears led midway through the contest, but faltered late in a 51-31 loss to the Tigers. Will Young began the meet at 145 pounds by handling Derick Gracey 11-2. Mexico took the next three bouts before Antonio Cutrie, at 182 pounds, took 51 seconds to pin Brandon Gracey. Right after, Jusin Cox got his own pin at 195 pounds, finishing off Kenneth Stevens with 29 seconds left in their bout, while Casey Placito (220 pounds) had to go the full six minutes for a 9-4 decision over Jonathan Bouck. That put the Bears in front 19-18, but it had to forfeit two of the next three bouts, and that, plus a pin by Theo Powers (106 pounds) over Cooper Young, put the Tigers ahead for good. Alex Miller (120 pounds) began a brief comeback, pinning Brent Sawyer in 3:14, while Wyatt Blanding (126 pounds) took just 1:25 to pin Tylor Allard. But Connor Fredericks (132 pounds) fell, 5-2, to Mitch Shambo, which clinched Mexico’s win. As Chittenango heads to Vernon-Verona-Sherrill for this Saturday’s Section III Class B meet, Cazenovia goes to north, to General Brown (home of the reigning sectional Dual Meet champions), for the Class C sectional championships.
