— Last Friday, Sept. 19, saw the grand opening of two new businesses on Albany Street in the village: ARTicles and AmeriCU Credit Union.

ARTicles, located at 58 Albany St. and owned and operated by Joise Glos and Dianna Slodowitz, is a retail shop full of an eclectic array of offerings from clothing and shoes, to furniture and dishes, to artwork and frames – and even taxidermied animals.

“We have our own style; that’s what this shop is all about,” said Slodowitz. “We hope people will see the uniqueness of this, which is kind of funky.”

“I’m excited. It’s the first time I’ve done retail,” said Glos, who is a nurse by profession. “It’s been a lot of work to get this ready all summer, but we’ve had a lot of help and excitement. It’s a different store.”

Glos and Slodowitz signed their lease over the summer and have spent the past few months doing a total refurbishing of the interior space, including adding and removing walls, a new paint job and a new lighting configuration.

Even before the store’s sign was hung outside the building last Friday, ARTicles was receiving a steady stream of curious visitors perusing the men’s shirts and socks designed by Robert Graham, the women’s fashions by Eileen Fisher and Tasha Polizzi and the Roger DeMuth artwork displayed on the walls.

“What a wonderful store!” said customer Teresa Park. “This brings a new level of excitement to the street and the shopping here. I think it will be a fun place for people to come.”

ARTicles’ hours of operation have not been finalized yet, but will probably be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., possibly with extended hours on Fridays, Slodowitz said.
