“It was on a smaller scale than the event we’re having at the Budweiser Brewery definitely, but it was a good grassroots event to get more young people involved.”
The city of Syracuse does not have a young professionals group for ACS — yet, but it does have an event planning committee with members dedicated to raising awareness and funds for cancer research. Last year, the American Cancer Society held its first Hops for Hope here, and people responded. Attendance hit its max with 250 guests and raised $40,000 to help local cancer patients. All funds raised support the American Cancer Society.
This year, Hops for Hope is back at Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser) Brewery in Baldwinsville. The event will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, and includes an evening of beer sampling, dinner by Bull & Bear Catering, live entertainment (acoustic duo Mike Kelly and Alex Boatman, who play originals, as well as past and current folk-rock hits such as Bob Dylan, Mumford & Sons, Johnny Cash and Tom Petty), a guided factory tour of the brewing process, raffles and more.
This is the first year the event will have an honorary chair, former Syracuse University punter Rob Long. “We are most proud of having a young, cancer survivor [who has] name recognition within the town,” said Gebhardt, adding that Long is bringing an autographed and personally worn jersey to raffle.
Another raffle prize consists of a “Choose Your Destination Vacation” with two first class Delta Airline tickets and a weekend stay at a Wyndham Hotel anywhere in the Continental U.S.
Tickets for Hops for Hope cost $100 per person and are available by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, by phone at 433-5649, or via the following 40 Below paypal link: http://40belowsyracuse.com/hops-for-hope-2/. Only 250 tickets will be sold.
