Parents, protect your children from identity theft

— Identity theft puts a terrible burden on victims that can follow them for life. Worst of all, our children are becoming more and more vulnerable. That’s why I supported legislation which would give parents, or students age 18 or over, the opportunity to opt out of the state education department’s disclosure of personal information to a third party. New Yorkers shouldn’t have to risk being victimized by those who seek to steal our information and illegally use it for their own benefit.

For more information regarding identity theft, call the New York State Division of Consumer Affairs at 1-800-697-1220 or visit online at dos.ny.gov. If you notice any fraudulent use of your child’s information, please contact the Onondaga County Sherriff at 435-3044. You can contact my office with questions on this issue or any other by calling 452-1115 or email me at StirpeA@Assembly.state.ny.us.
