The Labor Day weekend featured a lot of events which have been covered in the sports domain of our local newspapers. However, I’m sure that the sailing results from the All Lake Regatta for the trophy of the same name and the Wiles Trophy, based on boat and skipper handicaps, were not covered by the sports reporters.
The All Lake Regatta was established by George Barnes who also provided the large trophy board which features lightnings, comets, 14-foot Canadian dinghys and mowers. It has half-models of each class mounted on it and rather large brass plates for each class result, but they were used up fairly quickly. The board was retained by one sailor who won his class three times. It was the custom in those days that after three straight wins, a trophy was considered retired. The deed of gift was nonexistent and members were not successful in persuading this individual to return the trophy board at that time. However, he eventually directed his heirs to return it to the club and it now hangs in the trophy gallery. Scoop Baker made a board which hangs on the trophy, with lots of small plates so that it will be useful for many years to come to record results.
The regatta was originally an open event for the classes mentioned above, but now any type of sailboat can compete. A simple handicapping method, evolved by the US Sailing Association, uses the elapsed finish time based on the class of boat.
This year 20 boats competed. Years ago, 50 or 60 boats showed up on race day. Notice of the race and an invitation to compete used to be attached to the rigging of anchored sailboats around the whole lake. Towing was offered if the wind was inadequate to get a boat to the starting line from down the lake by 2 pm.
