Liverpool swimmers defeat C-NS, 93-85

Murphy, Telesca each win pair of races for Warriors

— Most of the regular-season athletic contests between Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse take place in the neighborhoods of the two bordering districts.

But that was not the case in Wednesday night’s girls swim meet, held at the Northstars’ “home” pool at Le Moyne College. Regardless of the venue, though, it was the Warriors finishing on top by a score of 93-85.

They were close and competitive right at the start. Olivia Corlett, Sydnie Sovinsky, Nicole Abbott and Madison Hall swam the 200 medley relay in 2:01.32, just ahead of the C-NS quartet of Breanna Ruffrage, Kelly Festa, Kayla Massena and Lizzy Hall, who was second in 2:02.16, less than a second behind Liverpool.

From there, though, the Warriors won the next nine events, two each by Madeline Murphy and Julia Telesca, to put the meet out of the Northstars’ reach.

Murphy needed just 25.23 seconds to tear through the 50 freestyle, and completed her sprint sweep by winning the 100 freestyle in 55.89 seconds. Telesca needed 2:08.69 to prevail in the 200 freestyle as she went on to beat C-NS’s Lauren Thorne, 5:42.70 to 5:45.70, in the 500 freestyle.

Sovinsky blazed through the 100 butterfly in 1:01.85 and Corlett was first (1:06.82) in the 100 backstroke, this after Alyssa Vadala picked up 162.65 points on the diving board. Meghanne O’Connell gave Liverpool a first-place time of 2:20.34 in the 200 individual medley.

Corlett and Murphy, teaming with Telesca and Claire Donovan, swam the 200 freestyle relay in 1:49.09, with Massena, Thorne, Ruffrage and Lizzy Hall second in 1:50.38.

Finally, the Northstars got an individual title in the 100 breaststroke, where Kelly Festa (1:17.86) and Jamie Rolf (1:18.08) went 1-2, this before Thorne, Kiersten Coates, Sarah Walter and Kelsey Haven won the 400 freestyle relay to close out the meet.
