LETTER: Current leaders mishandled SRCT situation

To the editor:

As a long-time member of this community, I was upset by the town board’s actions earlier this year directed at the Skaneateles Recreational Charitable Trust, the owner of the Community Center of which I am a board member. The town, village and school district were founding members and trustees of that organization, which was formed to build the Community Center. With the generous support of the Allyn family, and countless members of this community, the SRCT raised over $9 million and built that wonderful facility. It is something that benefits all of us, even if we aren’t members.

Despite its role as a founding member and trustee of SRCT, and despite the obvious benefit to the community from having such a facility, the town board demanded that SRCT purchase used athletic and office equipment when the town turned over its management role to the YMCA. After refusing requests to donate the used equipment, which it could have done, the town board demanded payment of over $80,000, and then sued the SRCT for $150,000 when that demand was rejected. SRCT was forced to use its scarce cash resources to purchase some of the used equipment and turned over the rest of the equipment to the town.

What became of that valuable used equipment which the town seized?

The town board should be embarrassed by its mishandling of this situation, and the community should be reminded prior to the upcoming election.

The town needs new leadership. I urge voters to support Claire Robinson Howard and Connie Brace for town councilor and Mary Sennett for supervisor.
