WG soccer sides drop 1-0 matches

Wildcats will play early in boys, girls AA sectionals

All season long, the theme for the West Genesee girls soccer team has proved the same – good enough to hang close to every other major Section III Class AA title contender, but not often beating them.

That pattern repeated again last Tuesday night, at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, where the Wildcats stuck close to Baldwinsville, but still took a 1-0 defeat to the Bees.

Large portions of the game were played in WG’s end, but the defense remained quite solid, turning back chances and watching as Rebecca Rothenberg was sensational, stopping 20 of 21 shots she faced.

Only one shot found the net, coming from B’ville’s Jade Gentile in the first half. That single tally held up as the Wildcats had its own fair amount of chances, but could not get anything past Bees goalie Jaclyn Hingre, who made 14 saves for the shutout.

In yet another close contest for West Genesee’s boys soccer team, it again had all kinds of chances against Henninger last Wednesday night, but still lost 1-0 to the Black Knights.

Jeanmarie Sinigirra picked up a first-half goal and put Henninger in front. From there, the Wildcats didn’t allow anything more, Tim Fletcher picking up seven saves, but all of WG’s attacks came up empty against a Black Knights side also trying to get into the post-season.

WG’s girls drew the no. 9 seed in Class AA and a first-round game against no. 8 seed Utica Proctor, with the winner advancing to meet top seed Cicero-North Syracuse. On the boys side, the no. 10 seed Wildcats host no. 10 seed Rome Free Academy, with the winner drawing no. 2 seed B’ville in the quarterfinals.
