Girls soccer Lakers wrap up OHSL Liberty title

Skaneateles has no. 4 seed in Class B sectionals

From the moment it beat Cazenovia in the Aug. 30 season opener, the Skaneateles girls soccer team set the pace in the OHSL Liberty National division, and never let anyone catch up.

To cap off its second consecutive league championship run, the Lakers put together a superb all-around effort in last Thursday’s game at Jordan-Elbridge, prevailing by a score of 6-0.

Not since the early 1990s has Skaneateles won back-to-back league titles, but in its rise to no. 7 in the state Class B rankings, the Lakers set itself apart from the field, especially on Sept. 24 when it stunned then-unbeaten Marcellus 1-0, still the only loss the Mustangs have taken all season.

Though some struggles followed (including a 2-1 loss in the rematch with Cazenovia in early October), Skaneateles found its top form again when defenders Lauren Goodchild and Taylor Woodruff came back from injury.

With the back line settled, the Skaneateles attack could resume its normally aggressive mode, and at J-E, it didn’t take long for the goals to pile up, the Lakers racing out to a 4-0 edge.

Just as important as the production was its diversity. Five different players would score by game’s end, with only Molly Wood finding the net twice.

Tate Green produced a goal and two assists, with Catie Woodruff and Raenah Campbell each managing one goal and one assist. Goodchild also joined in the fun with a goal as Kyla Sears and Emmeline Graham each picked up assists, too.

On Sunday, the 13-2-1 Lakers, who have just one Section III title in the program’s history, found out about its placement in the Class B playoff bracket.

Skaneateles drew the no. 4 seed, which meant that, if it beats no. 13 seed Frankfort-Schuyler in the opening round, it could host no. 5 seed Westhill in the quarterfinals, should the Warriors make it past Holland Patent. Westhill knocked out the Lakers last year in the sectional tournament in penalty kicks in that same quarterfinal round.
