Skaneateles Party candidates seek support

To the editor:

We feel strongly that the need for a sustainable future for our community transcends national political alignments. To respond to that need by representing all who cherish Skaneateles, our team of three candidates is running for the town board on the independent Skaneateles Party ticket, with no national party affiliation.

We are: Mary Sennett, candidate for town supervisor; and Connie Brace and Claire Robinson Howard, candidates for the two open town councilor seats.

As long-time Skaneateles residents, parents and professionals, our concerns and vision are local and deeply rooted. Together, we are dedicated to the quality and sustainability of the place we call home: Skaneateles Lake, its residential, agricultural and business communities, and the natural beauty of its surroundings.

At the heart of what people value as Skaneateles residents, families, employers, workers and homeowners is our lake. Keeping it clean is paramount, to ensure that our area remains desirable and property values strong. Our green spaces give us more than a view. They protect the lake from erosion and runoff that would otherwise necessitate a multimillion-dollar filtration system to meet State Health Department regulations for drinking water.

Therefore, we must guard the watershed with thoughtfully targeted growth and flexible redevelopment. Far from being anti-development, we support intelligent growth that takes into account our infrastructure and environmental resources, fosters vibrant communities, and encourages a stable, multigenerational populace served by dedicated local businesses.

Besides safeguarding the lake, we must protect the scale and coherence of our town through balanced development of beneficial enterprises. All stakeholders must be sought out and listened to, and long-term sustainability must guide decisions.

Finally, accountable leadership requires clear, open, ongoing communication with residents, the Village Board and other local organizations. The Town Board must commit to fiscal responsibility, transparent decision-making and cooperative working relationships.
