Coyne sisters lead J-D swimmers past CBA

Rams' tandem wins four races, helps in two relays

— As a sister tandem, Jamesville-DeWitt’s Kalie and Alden Coyne have few equals among any of the high school girls swim teams in Central New York.

And the Coyne sisters may have enjoyed their finest collective hour in Tuesday night’s 104-84 victory by the Red Rams over Christian Brothers Academy at the J-D Middle School pool that is located just down the street from CBA.

It didn’t take long for J-D, and the Coynes, to seize control. The sisters joined Molly Hair and Sophie Farchione in the opening race, the 200 medley relay, where the Rams, in a time of 1:58.22, easily pulled away from CBA (2:05.12) for the victory.

Kalie Coyne then turned her attention to individual events, cruising to victory in the 200 individual medley in 2:17 flat, more than 14 seconds better than CBA’s Julia Torell. Right after, in the 50 freestyle, Alden Coyne won in 25.90 seconds, with Hair (26.94 seconds) giving J-D a 1-2 finish.

Moving to the 100 butterfly, Kalie Coyne won a second individual title in 1:01.12 as Hayley Schultz (1:05.19) settled into the second spot. Again, Alden Coyne immediately followed with a victory of her own, in the 100 freestyle, getting a time of 56.70 seconds, with Katie Salvo (58.81 seconds) in the runner-up spot for the Rams.

J-D also saw Schultz, in 1:12.95, and Erin Noble (1:16.53) go 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke, this after Meredith Wagner needed 5:55.15 to hold off CBA’s Katie Toole (5:59.22) and win the 500 freestyle.

To culminate its victory, J-D paired the Coyne sisters with Salvo and Meghan Parker in the 200 freestyle relay, where the Rams posted 1:47.30, leaving CBA (1:53.88) far behind.

The Brothers claimed just two individual events. Annie Fletcher held off Parker, 2:08.61 to 2:11.56, in the 200 freestyle, while Sam Lanzafame (178.4 points) and Cassie Finkbeiner (174.8 points) went 1-2 in diving. Fletcher, Torell, Mary Frances Ierlan and Kendall Sangster won the closing 400 freestyle relay in 4:17.37.

As that went on, Fayetteville-Manlius lost, 102-74, to West Genesee, even though Caroline Morteliti, Christina Burnam, Amelia Krouse and Allison Alcott prevailed in the 200 freestyle relay in 2:02.85, beginning a late Hornets surge.

Grace Garver, in 1:18.68, edged Burnam (1:19.03) in the 100 backstroke, with Sophie Fowler winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.62. Mortelliti returned with Caroline Muller, Elize Oliverio and Teagan Neveldine as F-M claimed the 400 freestyle relay in 4:59.45.
