Cicero LETTER: Thanks to our community
To the editor:
On the weekend of Aug. 9 to 11, the fourth annual Gus Macker Basketball Tournament took place outside Drivers Village. While the weather was beautiful, the support of this community was even better.
We presented a mascot game and North Syracuse school district challenge on Friday night, but the “real” competition didn’t start until Saturday morning. We drew 199 teams consisting of 796 athletes from all over Central New York and beyond. The tournament ran for two days with the final trophies being awarded on Sunday afternoon.
This was all made possible through the efforts of 152 volunteers who provided 1,588 hours of service to benefit The CanTeen, and, additionally, according to the Syracuse/Central New York Visitors Bureau, $266,000 was added to our community’s economy. Wow!
On behalf of the Friends of the CanTeen, but mostly from the hearts of our young people, I’d like to say a sincere thank you to all of our volunteers as well as the community at large for their support.
Please plan on joining in the fun next Aug. 8 to 10. It’s a great family event.
