Marion Secor, middle, is photographed at the Nov. 8 CNYSPCA Kizey award ceremony with Drew Raushi, left, and Matt Beeman. Drew is a Skanda staff member and Matt is a volunteer who adopted two of the rescue ponies.
Secor received the award on behalf of Skanda and thanked everyone who played a pivotal role in supporting the ponies through their recovery process. She singled out people from the community whose generosity and kindness made a profound difference in the lives of the ponies, and spoke about each of their contributions.
One young man, an Amish gentleman from the Nelson area, had come to the farm almost daily after the ponies arrived to help a struggling mare stand up on her feet, supporting her with his own weight. Because of his compassion and dedication, Secor said, the mare is alive today and healthy and strong.
A woman from Cazenovia who is an equine professional and horse lover had donated a soft bed of straw to the yearling who passed away in his first week at Skanda, and Marion thanked her for showing him love. “Because of you,” she said, “he experienced love and what is more beautiful than that.”
