CSD public forum will be Nov. 20

Public to discuss ideas for district's future

The Skaneateles public is invited to attend a meeting about the future of the school district at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, in the Waterman School auditorium.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for interested parties to present ideas and suggestions pertaining to the future of the district and how it will handle impending fiscal challenges.

The meeting will be the beginning of the district's plan to study strategies for the district's future that Interim Superintendent of Schools Judy Pastel initially laid out at the Nov. 5 board of education meeting.

The forum was originally planned for Nov. 12, but was postponed one week to give community members more time to learn about the district.

At the session on Nov. 12, Pastel and Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance Dale Bates shared more details about the stressors the district faces as it moves into the future. They explained why changes must be made in order to remain fiscally responsible while maintaining a top-notch school district.

The district has also posted information on its website that everyone is encouraged to review.

Ideas and suggestions that are gathered Nov. 20 will be considered by a small group. That group will pass the most viable options on to three study groups. Those study groups (one each for parents, teachers and District Planning Team members) will look at alternatives in greater depth. Study groups will submit suggestions and solutions to the superintendent. Pastel will then make recommendations to members of the board of education who will make the final decision on financial and major programmatic changes.

The superintendent may give an update to the community at a meeting in December. Three additional meetings will be held through the end of February. All of the scheduled meetings will begin at 7:15 p.m., and are not regular board meetings, to allow for discussion. The board of education and the superintendent hope that community members will attend all of the community meetings to be informed and to give input.
