LETTER: ‘One for the Books’ a success

To the editor:

On Saturday, Oct. 14 more than 130 book lovers visited 10 local hosts for a pleasant evening of conversation, discussion of a chosen book, and a lovely dinner. In many homes the book discussion was led by the actual author, in others it was an engaging moderator. Everyone met at the library after dinner for dessert and drinks.

This year “One for the Books” raised more than $13,000 for our local library. The funds will be used to continue to provide the quality reading materials and interesting programs brought to our community throughout the year.

There are many people to thank for making “One for the Books” 2013 a success:

This year our gracious and generous hosts were Paula and Ed Conan, Barb Connor, Suzanne and Rick Galbato, Dave Graham, Jill and Todd Marshall, Julie and Jim Moore, Eileen and Win Price, Marcia and John Watt, Peg and Doug Whitehouse and Teri Elia (I mainly just did what I was told).

The speakers who made this such an interesting event were Bill Sanford, Rick Burton, Bob Eggleston, Dave Lee, Ron Ryan, Martha Arual Akech, John Bul Dau, Paul Kocak, Sean Kirst, Douglas Kinney Frost, the Honorable Judge Rosemary Pooler, and John Taliaferro, who traveled all the way from Montana just for our event!

Our corporate sponsors were a key to this year’s success. They were Welch Allyn, NBT Bank, Lakeview Auto and Marine, Syracuse Securities, M&T Bank, Patience Brewster Inc., Ramsgard Architectural Design, and Tessy Plastics.

Gift-in-kind donations were provided by Creative Cuisine, the Sherwood Inn, the Village Bottle Shop, the Monogram Shop of Skaneateles and Creekside Books and Coffee.

The event was organized by Peg Whitehouse, along with Dave Graham, Gary Trenti, Liz Dreyfuss and Todd Marshall. Peg in particular put in more hours than I think she would like to admit.

Finally, a special thank you to everyone who came out on a windy fall night to support our local library. I hope everyone had a delightful time.
