J-D lacrosse wins fifth straight sectional title

Red Rams pound Carthage, 23-9, in Class B final

— What followed ended any doubts, though. Just 12 seconds after Boulio's goal, McKee scored, and 42 seconds later it was Evans finding the net, and then Mike Engstrom converted to make it 9-4.

All told, it was three goals in a span of 65 seconds, sparking a 5-0 run to close the half that made it 11-4 at the break. Archer said those kinds of spurts can deflate an opponent, and are a tribute to the dominant work in the face-off circle by Lucas Johnson and Jeff Edwards.

Amid a long string of penalties, the second half saw J-D steadily extend its margin, and again showcase the talents of Evans, whom Archer said is a special player because, despite his gaudy statistics, he wants to share the wealth.

"He does everything a coach can ask for and he's never been selfish (while) trying to get other people involved," said Archer.

That's made J-D an exciting team to watch, and plenty of other players get involved, including McKee, who has notched 10 total goals in the playoffs. Durkin and Engstrom both scored twice against Carthage as Edwards and Griffin Johnson also scored. Lucas Johnson had a pair of assists.

J-D needed a bit of patience to reach the title game. The Class B semifinal against no. 3 seed Watertown at Central Square was pushed back a day by weather delays that stretched out the other semifinal game, Carthage’s 11-5 win over Auburn.

So when the Rams took the field against the Cyclones, it had not played a game in nearly two weeks, but the rest refreshed the Rams, who jumped all over Watertown in the first half and breezed to a 21-9 victory.

In an active first quarter, J-D shook off some defensive lapses and sprinted to a 9-3 lead. More offense followed the rest of the half, the Rams not letting up a bit as it stretched out its margin to 16-5 on the Cyclones by the time they reached the break.

McKee stepped up for J-D, matching Evans as they both picked up five goals and three assists, with Feiner close behind them as he earned four goals and two assists.

Griffin Johnson picked up one goal and one assist. Engstrom, Mike Perkins Lucas Johnson, Jeff Edwards, Scott Firman and Conal Brady earned one goal apiece.

J-D has to win two regional playoff games in the state tournament, starting with Wednesday's opener against the Section X champion at Potsdam High School. A win there would send J-D to next Saturday's regional final at Union-Endicott.
