A local motel has changed hands and is undergoing some changes this spring.
Whispering Winds Motel, located at 4221 E. Genesee St. in Sennett about one mile from the village of Skaneateles, was sold this May for a price of $305,000.
The motel was built in 1952 and had been owned and operated since 1999 by Rita Drake under the company name Whispering Winds Motel, LLC. The new owner, Puzo Properties run by Gina Puzo, is based in Groton, N.Y., where they operate rental properties. This is their first venture into the hotel/motel business Gina Puzo said.
The new ownership is currently renovating and updating the interior and exterior to make it more modern while still maintaining some of the charms of the original design, Puzo said. A couple of the 12 rooms are available for rent as of May 15.
Whispering Winds has operated in the past as a seasonal motel, opening in May and closing in October or November, mainly catering to tourists, wedding guests and people coming to Skaneateles for other summer events.
Puzo said she may now also keep it open through December to capitalize on visitors for the holidays and events like Dickens Christmas.
“We are very excited about being in Skaneateles and the Skaneateles area and being a part of the environment of Skaneateles and continuing to provide rooms to cater to that environment,” Puzo said.
The motel and house, which the motel manager resides in, is situated on two acres of land in Sennett and a part of the Skaneateles Central School District, realtor John Bouck, said.
“The motel is situated a very short distance from the Village of Skaneateles, on a major Route 20, which has provided an excellent occupancy rate. While it is essentially a seasonal motel, it has always been well maintained and attractive. We are confident that it will remain an asset to the area,” Bouck said.
The neighboring 14-room Colonial Motel is also currently listed for sale with an asking price of $320,000.
