Lysander Parks and Recreation spring programs

— Start Smart Baseball

This six-week program held from 1 to 2 p.m. Sundays, June 24 to July 28, will allow parents to work with children (boys and girls, ages 4 and 5 years old) and teach them the basic fundamentals of baseball: throwing, catching, hitting and running in a fun and safe environment. It also gives parents that special quality time with their child that they need to learn and grow. Deadline to sign up for Start Smart Baseball is noon on May 31 so that equipment can be ordered; there will be no refunds once ordered.

Defensive driving

This defensive driving course held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, June 3 and 5, in the community room at Lysander Park, is designed to meet the needs of all motorists including point reduction; participants may be eligible to receive a 10 percent discount on their car insurance. No tests are given; free coffee and a small snack will be provided by instructor Duncan Sisk. Participants must attend both nights.

This babysitting course held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at the Lysander Town Park community room will teach the following: planning for a babysitting job; knowing what to expect of children; selecting toys and games; supervising children; preventing accidents; giving First Aid, rescue breathing; caring for infants and children; and feeding them. Students who complete the course will receive a resource book full of pertinent information, an emergency reference guide and a CD ROM with valuable tools. They will also receive a certificate of completion. Students should bring a lunch and something to write with and must be 11 years old before the program starts.
