Baldwinsville It is the season when residents like to enjoy outdoor, recreational fires. Consider the following guidelines from the Village of Baldwinsville Code Enforcement office should you decide to engage in this activity:
Recreational fires shall not be conducted within 25 feet of a structure (building for example) or combustible material. This distance can be reduced to a 15-foot minimum if the unit has complete protection and lid - such as a lid with screen. Recreational fires shall be constantly attended and supervised until the fire is completely extinguished and are not safe when winds exceed 15 mph.
Use common sense and respect your neighbors by not allowing smoke to blow toward their home or laundry, for example. Smoke that becomes a nuisance is not allowed.
A minimum of one portable fire extinguisher with a minimum 4-A rating or other approved on-site fire-extinguishing equipment such as dirt, sand, water barrel, garden hose or water truck, must be available for immediate utilization should you have a fire.
The total fuel area (fire size) must be three feet or less in diameter and 24 inches or less for fuel height.
Examples of a recreational fire (with all the above requirements met) include: sitting by the outdoor fire with friends enjoying the evening or cooking hot dogs.
Examples of illegal burning (violations of local and state burning laws can result in a $250 fine per violation per day) include, but are not limited to: burning of leaves, grass, garbage, tires, dead animals, rubber products, paint, used oil, tar, plastic and painted, treated or contaminated wood.
Remember that the Village of Baldwinsville has a program for the removal of yard waste, therefore do not burn yard waste, and the fire and/or police department, code enforcement officer and/or fire marshal are authorized to require recreational fires be immediately discontinued.
