Letters to the editor on the BOE election

In Skaneateles, our obligation for teachers’ salaries and pensions alone consume about 70 percent of the entire budget. Please don’t look at this as an affront on teachers but I think it is only reasonable that we address our major cost. Starting teachers’ salaries can range as high as $50,000 and some are now making well over $85,000 annually. Depending on when you were hired the district pays 90 to 100 percent of the individual’s health insurance premium and 80 percent of dependent coverage. Lastly, for an annual contribution of 3 percent of salary a teacher can retire after 25 years with 70 to 79 percent of their salary. This also includes a significant number of days off.

It’s your call to make. Be sure to vote.

BOE candidate Lambdin asks for support in election

To the editor:

My name is Tom Lambdin, and I’m concluding a term on the Skaneateles Board of Education. With earnest appreciation to the people of the Skaneateles school district, I’m writing to request voters to consider returning me to a second term on the board. Over the past three years during more than 70 formal meetings, the board has worked with two superintendents and our faculty, staff and administration to provide excellent education for students. The next board will hire a new superintendent during a time of great transition in curriculum, personnel, technology, student assessment, performance appraisal, decreasing population and community evolution. Employment upheaval continues, with high likelihood that a segment of students in today’s classrooms will pursue careers not yet even presently envisioned.

While school board work is multifaceted, a prime board member responsibility is public representation. My goal during the last three years was to have you predominantly satisfied, at times perhaps even delighted, with board influence on school operations and student outcome. However, as your elected representative with perfect attendance at each and every board meeting, extensive training, and presence at numerous school events, my role also has been to understand when you have been concerned. Please continue to reach out with feedback, and know that my board position equally accepts constructive criticism.
