COLUMN: Greater Baldwinsville Ice Arena is in good shape

— In light of the recent article in the Messenger, Future of Radisson ice arena uncertain, dated April 9, The Greater Baldwinsville Ice Arena would like to provide a response to the community and ensure everyone that the rink is here to stay and is being operated efficiently and effectively by a not-for-profit organization, the GBIA.

In April of 2012, the GBIA started meeting with the Town of Lysander to discuss the current lease. The town approached GBIA and questioned the current lease arrangement and felt it was lopsided in the direction of GBIA. This lease was negotiated and discussed publicly and endorsed by the town board that was in place at the time.

The Town of Lysander also hired a firm to evaluate the ice arena. The firm came back with several improvements that were recommended, some were necessary and others were not. After speaking with the GBIA mechanical firm and thinking in the best interest of the community on how to keep prices down for our customers, GBIA evaluated those projects, prioritized them and decided to complete those that “may” effect safety first then address others as practical.

The report had several “nice to do” projects listed that were determined to be either not necessary or not prudent at this time. It also brought to light some important housekeeping recommendations that proved beneficial.

To summarize:

The evaluation listed several items for inspection with rough estimates for projected cost. Since the inspector wasn’t fully aware of the current operation, many of their suggested improvements were not required or overstated in price. For example, the report stated that it would cost $150,000 to recharge the ice arena’s cooling system. In reality, the cooling system didn’t need to be recharged and it was fine and fully operational as stated by the GBIA inspector.
