LETTERS: Consider golf outing for local school

— Sometimes I am surprised to hear that some in our community still may not know that we have a premier private, Catholic school right in our own backyard. St. Mary’s Academy, which has served the greater Baldwinsville area for more than six decades, is a small school with a big heart. In addition to providing a faith-based education to our grade school aged children right in the middle of our wonderful downtown Baldwinsville area, St. Mary’s Academy gives back so much to our local community.

The common misconception is that private schools take care of only their own. While St. Mary’s Academy may be a private school, our teachers, administrators, children and parents sponsor many community events and fundraise frequently not just for St. Mary’s Academy programs but also for many other local charitable organizations. Our St. Mary’s Academy family members volunteer and otherwise participate in and support numerous local initiatives throughout the school year; giving back to our community is part of the many life lessons that St. Mary’s Academy teaches to its students.

To maintain its position in the community and as a preeminent Catholic educator of our youth, St. Mary’s Academy does also need community support in turn. To that end, St. Mary’s Academy hosts a few major fundraising events throughout the year that are open to the public. One such event is the St. Mary’s Academy Annual Golf Classic and Dinner. This year’s golf classic will occur on June 9 at the newly-renovated Radisson Greens Golf Course. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. and is a “captain and crew” format. The cost for golf is just $80 until June 1 and $85 thereafter including on the day of the event. Singles and foursomes are welcome. For this small fee our golfers receive 18 holes of golf with cart, food at the turn, snacks and drinks along the way and dinner, as well as access to contests for wonderful prizes (including a major hole-in-one jackpot) and fun raffles, so bring your cash with you.

Moreover, there is a wine tasting and pairing event free for all golfers and those who attend the dinner. (There is a dinner/wine tasting-only option for just $35 per person). In addition to golf and dinner, and perhaps more important, is that there are sponsorship opportunities available, which provide tremendous corporate or personal marketing opportunities.

We hope that people in the Baldwinsville area will want to support St. Mary’s Academy through attending or sponsoring this event. Please email Rebecca.speno@yahoo.com or call 254-9558 for more information.
