SYRACUSE Citizens that have served our country in the military are deserving of, at the very least, recognition. To serve your country during perilous times is a great honor and a great sacrifice. The Oncenter War Memorial Arena is more than a place where the Syracuse Crunch play hockey, it is a living memorial to those that have served, and in some cases, those that have given their lives for our freedom. It is important to honor the individuals that have made the ultimate sacrifice.
The War Memorial Honor Wall is maintained by the Oncenter staff. The largest wall is for veterans that were residents of Onondaga County when they enlisted. Currently, this wall has over 62,000 names of residents that served in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. To add your name or a deceased family member’s name to the wall, you need to complete a short form, which needs to be submitted with a copy of the Veteran’s Military Separation Record. There are four different forms which are available at the Onondaga County Veterans Service office or the Oncenter. The necessary forms depend upon the time an individual served, if they were a resident of Onondaga County when they enlisted, if they have been a resident of Onondaga County for 10 years or more and the specific conflicts in which they have served. Staff at the Veterans Service Office and the Oncenter can guide you to the appropriate form. Once the form is completed, it can be submitted, along with the Military Separation Record, to the Oncenter at 800 S. State St., Syracuse, 13202.
If you or a family member would like to be honored at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena feel free to contact Onondaga County’s Veterans Service Agency at 435-3217 or the Oncenter at 435-8000. You can also contact Legislators Dudzinski and Tassone at the legislature’s office at 435-2070 for additional information.
