Cicero Former North Syracuse High School and Syracuse University star John Unger and his 1966-67 North Syracuse Northmen baseball teams, which won an eye-opening 43 straight games en route to back- to- back sectional championships, will be honored Friday, May 10 when Cicero-North Syracuse High School and the Northstar Baseball Booster Club hold their second annual Baseball Wall of Fame inductions at 6:30 p.m. at the Gillette Road Middle School varsity diamond.
Joining Unger, who went on to professional play in the Chicago Cubs system followed by a rewarding teaching and coaching career in the North Syracuse Central School District, are the late Elmer Westfall (NS ’47 and the most accomplished professional hitter in district history), the icon 1966 and 1967 teams led by Unger, Gary Rainbow, Frank Guido, Craig Murphy and the late Skip Kenny, and the 1988 Northstar contingent coached by Paul Wilson which became the first team in district history to advance to the New York State Final Four.
The Wall of Fame ceremony will take place between the first round games of the John Ilacqua Jr. Memorial Tournament in which the Northstars will be hosting a tough four team field comprised of West Genesse, Oneida and Marcellus. A complimentary cookout for all alumni players will follow the ceremony allowing all to reminisce and enjoy the 7PM showdown between C-NS and Oneida.
