Beaver Lake Nature Center: Last weekend for Maple sugaring and pancake breakfasts

— March maple sugaring and pancake breakfasts at Beaver Lake Nature Center mark the coming of spring. A visit to Beaver Lake Nature Center's demonstration sugarbush, open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. this Sunday, will introduce visitors to the heritage of sugaring and the production of maple syrup.

From 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday, Beaver Lake Nature Center invites the public to come enjoy a hearty pancake breakfast, which also includes sausage and juice or fresh brewed coffee. Depending on appetite, breakfast will range from $3 to $5. Visitors, including groups, are served and seated on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Spotted salamander migration

Beaver Lake Nature Center invites the public to witness this year's Spotted Salamander migration during a late March or early April evening. A naturalist-guided walk beginning at 6:30 p.m. will introduce participants to the natural history of these amphibians and the chance to meet a migrating salamander or two en route. Predictability is not always possible in nature, so interested participants in this evening of discovery should call the nature center at 638-2519 to be put on a calling list. The nature center will give participants at least a 24-hour notice. $2; registration required.

Trail tales

Preschool-age children, accompanied by an adult, are invited to gather at Beaver Lake Nature Center for the popular Trail Tales program at 1 p.m. Thursdays, March 28, April 11, 25, May 9 and 23. A naturalist reads two stories to the children and then leads the group on a hike themed to match the stories. This program is free with admission.

Nature movie Monday for children

The Children's Room at Beaver Lake Nature Center becomes a movie theater for nature movies at 4:30 p.m. every Monday afternoon in March and April. Elementary-age children can come learn about the following topics with new friends, hear from a naturalist how the movie relates to Beaver Lake and enjoy some complimentary popcorn during the show. Please call the nature center to register before 3 p.m. the day of the show. Seating is limited. Free with nature center admission.
