continued He remembered running for a trustee position on the village board with Scott McGrew and Harold Hopkinson in 2007. Serafin thanked Hopkinson for his dedication as deputy mayor and willingness to help him out when needed. He also thanked village attorney Jeff Brown, who joined the village board for the first time in 2007 as well.
Serafin then read a quote from a speech by Teddy Roosevelt called “The Man in the Arena,” which he said was sent to him in the wake of the March 19 election.
"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause.” Serafin went on to say how he believes the village needs more people, both elected officials and constituents, getting into the arena, and less people sitting on the sidelines taking the opportunity to focus on how those in the arena are failing. He thanked his mother for teaching him that when people stumble, it’s not about how many times they fall, it’s about the fact that they keep getting back up.
“In 55 years of being her child, I’ve seen what it’s like to be knocked down and not quit and not give up,” Serafin said. “And that has been at the core of me serving this village and will always be.”
Paul Whorrall will be sworn in as mayor on April first at the village center. The next Manlius village board meeting is set for April 9 at 7 p.m.
