Lion’s Camp Hickory launches new program aimed at diabetic children

— Lion’s Camp Hickory has announced a new program designed for children ages 9 to 18 living with type 1 or 2 diabetes. The new program, called Fitness, Nutrition and Wellbeing, includes the entire family but has a sharp focus on the diabetic child with a need to lose weight or tone up.

According to the NYS Department of Health, roughly 50 percent of Onondaga County residents can be classified as obese. Camp Hickory developed this program in the face of these staggering and rising obesity rates as well as an increased incidence of type 2 diabetes in children.

By teaming up with Aspen Athletic Clubs and Syracuse University, Camp Hickory will offer this 28-week program to families caring for a child with either type 1 or 2 diabetes. The first 14 weeks feature a minimum twice-weekly workout at Aspen Athletic Club in Liverpool. Camp Hickory will subsidize the registration and monthly membership fees for up to four immediate family members living in the same household. The second 14-week session features home-based exercise regimens and may include equipment on loan from Camp Hickory such as Wii FIT.

Family participation and support is considered critical to the success of the program for the diabetic. During both 14-week sessions, there will also be nutrition coaching seminars by a registered dietician and during the second session, cooking classes will be provided at Syracuse University.

The purpose of the nutrition coaching sessions is to provide information about healthy food alternatives for both snack and meal times. The cooking seminars will dispel the myth that cooking with fresh ingredients is both expensive and inconvenient and demonstrate how meals with fresh ingredients can be prepared and held frozen for the week then reheated by microwave. The advantage of this approach is to avoid commercially pre-frozen meals with added preservatives, color and flavor enhancers and other chemical additives. The program starts May 9.
