Cazenovia wins statewide Academic Decathlon competition

The Cazenovia High School Academic Decathlon team has claimed the top prize and 40 individual medals at the New York State Academic Decathlon Competition March 15 to 16 at Onondaga Community College.

“The team is extremely excited,” said Cazenovia High School English teacher Christie Brenneck, who advises the team with history teacher Martin Kelly. “They all did a great job."

Team members who competed at OCC were: Darren Mihaich, Robert Louis, David Martellock, Emma Dudley, Danielle Axelson, Kyle Polhamus, Riley Lloyd, Gaevin Froio, Caden Boone, Brock Houghton, Remi Boissonnas and Joseph Mevec.

The AD team competed in the interview and speech portion (a prepared four-minute speech and an impromptu two-minute speech) of the competition Friday evening, and then participated in the written and Super Quiz contests all day Saturday.

David Martellock and Joseph Mevec both were asked to perform their speeches during the “Speech Showcase,” in front of an audience of competitors, coaches and parents, while waiting for the judges’ results. David’s speech was “How to be a Hipster,” and Joe’s was “The Right to Bear Bears.”

“Both were entertaining and witty,” Brenneck and Kelly said in an email.

The team now advances to the national competition in Minneapolis, April 24 through 27.
