SAFE Act not a solution to gun violence

— Several provisions within the SAFE Act should be enacted. With the help of mental health professionals across the state, as well as probation officers and law enforcement officers, a new law should be created that ensures that the population with mental incapacities is addressed. Subsequently, Kendra’s Law should be strengthened to ensure individuals with mental illnesses are not able to legally obtain firearms.

Approximately two months ago, the governor and the state legislature made an egregious decision when they circumvented the democratic process that Americans hold so dear. New York state must consult with public safety officials and experts in the field of crime prevention to draft legislation specifically targeted to prevent gun-related crimes in the state’s urban centers, and while drafting this legislation, ensure that it does not infringe upon the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms.
