COLUMN: Tee Time with the Pro Noun - New survey reveals surprising statistics

According to a new survey conducted by Google Consumers Surveys, the vast majority of golfers regularly disregard the rules, have no idea what a USGA handicap is or how you establish one, and are turning to non-conforming golf equipment to hopefully play better and enjoy themselves.

Based on more than 6,800 respondents, here are the six key findings:

  1. 61 percent said they some times take mulligans, gimme putts and other popular infractions such as using the "foot wedge"

  2. 72 percent said they have never read the USGA's Rules of Golf which dictate the standards for professional play, competitive amateur tournaments and club championships

  3. 85 percent said they are "recreational golfers" and have no desire to follow the same standards as professional golfers and are not even sure what a USGA handicap is

  4. 78 percent said they play " mostly for fun "

  5. 63 percent of golfers said they would consider using equipment that was banned (non conforming use) from professional play

  6. 21 percent of Americans said they have played golf at least once or sometimes
