Cazenovia Counterpoint festival coming July 10 through 20

— More than 2,000 visitors are expected to attend this year’s Cazenovia Counterpoint festival, “Flights of Fancy: Arts Alive in CNY.” The festival will bring music, visual arts, theater and poetry to Cazenovia as part of the Society for New Music’s annual summer arts festival.

More than 18 unique performances and interactive sessions will be held across the village of Cazenovia between Wednesday, July 10, and Saturday, July 20. The majority of these events are free, and art is up at various venues throughout the village from July 2 through 30.

One of the key elements of this year’s Cazenovia Counterpoint festival is the interaction between festival participants — particularly youth — and performers.

“This is a very unique festival in that it involves youth in several different ways,” said society founder, Neva Pilgrim. “From our Rising Stars performance to our Young Composers’ Corner, to the ‘Wind in the Willows’ musical, Cazenovia Counterpoint pairs youth with professionals and peers to allow them to explore their creativity . . . we are privileged to have countless skilled creative artists in CNY, and the results of these collaborations are always a wonder to watch.”

Cazenovia Counterpoint arts festival aims to expose the Central New York community to a variety of art forms such as music, visual art, storytelling, drumming circles, poetry and theater. The first performance of the festival will take place at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Cazenovia. The concert, Rising Stars, features premieres of works by three young composers: Sam Peters, Paul Winchester and Emmanuel Sikora, performed by cellist Lucas Button, clarinetist Nina Elhassan and soprano Adina Martin. That afternoon at 5 p.m., Josh Ely will lead a drumming circle on the village green near the cannon. Both events are free.

On July 11, The Vanderbuilts will perform a free concert from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lakeland Park. The five-member band won Best New Artist at the 2013 SAMMY awards.
