Cicero sees significant economic development

— In the last year and a half, the town of Cicero has been interested in advancing the economic development of our community. As liaison to the zoning and planning department, I have been active in encouraging new residential and commercial projects. One measure taken has been to create a streamlined approach for business owners and representatives to come in and work with the planning board, and this has been key to successes that have come to pass.

This year we are seeing the benefits of the work done in 2012 with such major projects as the Loretto nursing home, currently under construction in the Cicero Commons Complex, and the 45,000-square-foot expansion of the JADAK manufacturing facility at Hancock Airpark. Additionally, on Route 11, we have added a new Aspen Dental facility and a new Chase Bank branch.

There are other projects that demonstrate an active commercial development environment in Cicero. The rapidly expanding Aldi supermarket chain will soon be established in the old Country Max Plaza on Route 31. Construction of a new McDonald’s and an Auto Zone expansion that includes a large warehouse facility are underway on Route 11.

Progress doesn’t end there, either. Recently, we have enjoyed grand openings of the retail store Men’s Warehouse in the Marketplace Plaza and the Five Star Urgent Care Center on Route 11. Expansions of the Coppertop Tavern and Tully’s Sports Restaurant, also on Route 11, were completed within the past few months. Additionally, there are also several new business projects that are currently in development.

Concurrent with all the new development, we have benefitted from the demolition of various eyesores like the old China Towne store next to Tully’s. We are also beginning a program to identify and take down abandoned homes and other buildings in the town. Soon the old military barracks at Hancock Field will join that list of demolished buildings.
