Akinpelu, Lawes stand out at state track meet

Liverpool stars both notch top-five individual finishes

Tammy Brodie, competing in the pentathlon, picked up 2,623 points for 15th place, but 11th in the Division I ranks, where Ward Melville’s Emily Astarita (3,392 points) won it.

Cicero-North Syracuse’s Morgan Austen was a participant in the boys pentathlon, where he had 2,957 points to help him finish 14th overall and sixth in Division I, where Scotia’s Eric Denny, with 3,270 points, had the top score.

Austen’s teammate, Joe Castaldo, threw the shot put 53 feet ¼ inch and gained ninth place overall, fifth in Division I, in an event where Smithtown West’s Benjamin Bonhurst threw it 61’11” for the state title.

Alex Christensen, with a time of 1:56.05, took 11th place in Division I, and 17th overall, in an 800-meter run won by Marcellus senior Ryan Manahan in 1:51.88.

Mark Vanmarter went 20’7” in the long jump for 15th place in Division I as Desmond Mobley (Greece Olympia) won with 24’9”, while Travis-Chewning-Kulick cleared 13 feet in the boys vault and took 10th place in Division I, 16th overall, in an event won by Ellenville’s Justin Farrenkopf as he cleared 15 feet.
