Other initiatives that the TREE Fund has supported have included research on planting and optimal pruning and maintenance methods to extend the lives of trees, especially those in urban areas, Gambill said.
Though many of the riders in the tour work as arborists or in the tree maintenance business, trees should be an important cause to everyone, Justin Espy said. “Anyone who breathes should care about trees,” Espy, a STIHL employee from Virginia Beach, Va., said.
Espy, completing the tour for the second straight year, said that the event is like a paid vacation because he gets to ride his bike and take in the beautiful New York and Ontario scenery, all while raising money for tree research and awareness.
While some of the stops, like Skaneateles, included tree dedications, some included demonstrations of tree maintenance, including how to deal with an infestation of borers, to raise awareness with the public.
