Fayetteville author publishes cook book with a twist

— About 10 years ago, Bailhe’ began going through all of her old notes and recipes to try to piece them together for her new project, a real cook book. She even hired someone to go through all of her old computers and find the recipe files she’d hidden away and forgotten about. Once she compiled them all, she had to go back through and test them all out to make sure they were perfect before adding them in the book, which she called “The Great Dane and Little Turtle: A Cooking Adventure.”

The title may seem different than what you get on most cook books, and that’s because this book has a little something extra: there is a love story, about a great dane and a little turtle, weaved throughout the book. It starts out by introducing the turtle, who meets the dane and they fall in love, travel and go on adventures. The great dane is from Copenhagen, Denmark and he named his "little darling" little turtle because she was traveling all over the world and carrying all of her clothes on her back in a pack like a turtle.

“There’s a fairy tale element – the book starts with ‘once upon a time,’” Bailhe’ said. “It’s a very innocent, sweet read. And it’s based on a true story.”

She said it isn’t necessary to read the short story – you can still prepare the recipes, but you’ll notice that many of the recipes have notes under them referencing the great dane and little turtle. Also, some recipes are named after them, for reasons you learn from the story.

The book is more than 400 pages and contains hundreds of recipes of French, Danish, American and Swedish origin. “It’s a good combination that hasn’t really been done,” she said. “I think the book will have a special following.” Additionally, many of the recipes give homage to Central New York. One of Bailhe’s favorites is the “Skaneateles Dreaming Pasta Salad.”
