The village installed one of the storm water cisterns underground adjacent to the parking lot in front of Dave's Diner on Albany Street last week.
Cazenovia Large concrete boxes were set into the ground in the village of Cazenovia last week. This work is part of a village stormwater remediation project funded by a grant from New York state. The purpose of this project is to reduce the volume of stormwater flow to the sewage treatment plant. The sewage treatment plant has a limit to how much flow it can manage; reducing the volume of stormwater flow will allow the treatment plant to accept sewage flow from new businesses in the village, such as the Empire Brewing Company’s proposed new brewery and visitors center.
The village of Cazenovia acquired a grant from New York state to implement this green project. Stormwater flowing into the sanitary sewer system is a major problem that the village of Cazenovia is working to correct, according to Mayor Kurt Wheeler. Some of the stormwater enters the system through residential or commercial combined stormwater/sanitary sewer hook-ups, such as those addressed by this grant. Stormwater also flows to the sewer system through gaps below ground level in the aging sanitary sewer network.
The village has contracted with GHD for this green project. GHD has developed a system design that will meet the environmental permit requirements of the sState agencies to implement the separation of stormwater runoff from the sanitary sewer for several buildings in the village. The system will collect rainwater from the roofs of the buildings along the north side of Albany Street, on either side of the intersection with Lincklaen Street.
Several of these buildings have relatively flat roofs, pitched so that stormwater flows into the combination roof drains/sewer vent lines. These roof drains serve two purposes: to drain the roof and to vent gas from the sewer piping. Stormwater runoff flows into the roof drain, down through the sewer vent lines, and into the sewer system. This flow subsequently discharges to the sewage treatment plant.
