Town approves draft Agricultural Protection Plan

— According to the draft plan, agriculture is a major part of industry in the town of Cazenovia, with 16,828 acres, or 54 percent, of the total 30,912 acres of the town (outside the village limits) used in part for agricultural production.

“Agriculture is the predominant land use in the town of Cazenovia and is a major industry in Madison County. Opportunities relating to production agriculture, agri-tourism, agricultural support businesses, distribution and processing are key to the town’s long-term economic development,” the draft report states.

Now that the Cazenovia Town Board has voted to approve the draft plan, it will schedule a public hearing on the issue at its February meeting. After that, the draft plan will be submitted to the state commissioner of agriculture for final approval, Andersen said.

The draft plan, which includes numerous maps, survey results, data and information, is available at the Nelson and Cazenovia town halls. It was available on the town of Nelson website at townofnelson-ny.com, but the site recently has been inoperable.
