Ice cutting

At 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, Beaver Lake Nature Center welcomes the public to the frozen shore of the Beaver Lake for an ice cutting demonstration. A naturalist will uncover the mysteries of food storage before the age of refrigerators and the lucrative business of ice harvesting during that era. Visitors will also have a chance to cut chunks of lake-ice from the lake with an antique ice saw. This program will still include the indoor presentation even if ice conditions do not permit actual ice harvest.

Snowshoe Race

Beaver Lake Nature Center and Eastern Mountain Sports are pleased to announce the fourth annual Snowshoe Race will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at the nature center. Participants can register for this 5K snowshoe race in advance or the morning of the event at the Visitor Center. $17 to register, $5 snowshoe rental available.

In addition, knowledgeable staff from Eastern Mountain Sports will demonstrate snowshoe use and will display key equipment used in this form of winter recreation from 10 a.m. to noon the day of the event. In case of insufficient snow coverage, a snow date has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17.

Grapes on ice

At 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, visitors can come to Beaver Lake Nature Center for a relaxing evening of wine tasting. Each guest will enjoy some basic food pairings, tasting notes, a raffle and the expertise of wine expert Gary Decker from Vinomania in Syracuse. Tickets are $50 per person and must be purchased in advance.
