The cold clichés of winter

— Vocalist Anna Vogel, who lives in Liverpool, hosts a new Thursday-evening jazz session at The Carnegie Cafe in the Maplewood Inn, 400 Seventh North St., near the corner of Buckley Road. The band will perform from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is free; 451-1511. Be sure to ask Anna to sing “Misty!”

A marimba combo named Kambuyu kicks off the sixth annual Folk Music Series at the Liverpool Public Library at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20. Admission is free; lpl.org; 457-0310.

Kambuyu plays happy, percussive music that is rhythmic and driving. I guarantee that you’ve never heard a concert quite like this one. The septet is both percussive and passionate. Bring the kids; they’ll definitely dig this!

The 2013 Folk Music Series, focusing on “dance rhythms,” continues Feb. 17 with Irish dance tunes performed by fiddler Joe Davoli and guitarist Harvey Nusbaum.

On Dec. 23 former major-league utilityman Ryan Freel was found dead from a self- inflicted shotgun blast in his Jacksonville, Fla. home. He was 36 years old.

Freel had played for the Syracuse SkyChiefs from 1998 to 2001, when he was a Toronto Blue Jays’ farmhand.
