The Cazenovia girls indoor track team opened their 2012-13 campaign with a decisive victory at the Mohawk Valley Relays, hosted by Colgate University on Dec. 20.
The Lady Lakers scored 92 points to place first in a 13 team field. The win was the 17th consecutive invitational victory for the girls, dating back to 2010.
The Lakers had a balanced attack, winning events in the sprints, distance and field to outpace runner-up Clinton (76 points) and third place RFA (48.5 points).
Senior Captain Ashley Winn led the team with wins in the 55-meter dash and 4x200. Winn’s time of 7.38 in the 55 was the fastest in Section III so far this season. She teamed up with first-year runner Clare Costello (7.94 seconds) for first place as a team in the meet’s relay format. Winn and Costello also teamed up with Ashley Kent and newcomer Sarah Willard to win the 4x200 in a time of 1:52.37, another No. 1 performance in CNY so far this season.
The 4x800-meter relay team of Captain Margaret Wolsey, Colleen Stalder, Grace Milmoe and Maureen Milmoe also captured first with a time of 10:49.29. Fellow distance runners Jeanette Cudney, Meredith Shephard, Adrien Owens and Mya Walters took silver in the 4x1500 in 22:39.
They were led by Junior Captain Cudney, who ran an outstanding 5:04.47, to record the fastest individual time in the race. The Sprint Medley Relay team was led by Captain Emily Willard who was joined by Kelsey Henderson, Jessie Matt and Hannah Light-Olson to take fourth in 4:57.77. The 55-meter hurdle relay of Kent and Owens also captured fourth place.
Cazenovia also dominated the jumps, as they won the long jump relay (Liz Pittman, 14-2.5 and Kelsey Henderson, 13-0) and the triple-jump relay (Hannah Light-Olson, 30-3 and Maureen Milmoe, 28-2). The Lakers also came close in the high jump, led by Freshman Tori Fischer’s outstanding leap of 4-11. She was aided by fellow freshman Brittney Devendorf (4-5). The duo of Pittman (6-6) and Glenna Kelahan (5-6) took third in the pole vault relay to cap the Laker scoring in the jumps.
