DeWitt, Skaneateles fire departments receive grant

U.S. senators Charles Schumer and Kirstren Gillibrand announced today that the Skaneateles and DeWitt fire departments will receive federal grant money for buying new equipment.

The Skaneateles Fire Department will receive $213,038 and the DeWitt Fire District will receive $134,663 to purchase new self-contained breathing apparatuses, according to a release from Gillibrand.

The money will come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters grant program.

“With this funding, Syracuse area firefighters can focus on their important work without fear for their own safety,” said Schumer in the release. “These investments for new equipment will help ensure that our local heroes can continue their life-saving work and will enable them to respond as effectively and safely as possible to the emergencies in our communities.”

The Skaneateles department will use the money to replace breathing apparatus oxygen bottles so that the firefighters can carry more oxygen with them. The DeWitt Fire District will use the money to replace old units that were in disrepair.
