J-D hoops offers dramatic sweep of CBA

Girls avenge previous defeat; Kinsey wins it for boys Rams

— Jamesville-DeWitt owned Saturday night as both the boys and girls basketball teams won their rivalry match-ups at Christian Brothers Academy, albeit in very different fashions.

The girls kicked off the doubleheader as senior Cydney Goodrum dominated the game for the Red Rams (14-3, 10-1 OHSL Freedom), dropping in a game-high 28 points in a 51-44 win that was more comfortable than the score would suggest, and gave CBA its first OHSL Freedom division loss.

“She hasn't played well traditionally against CBA,” J-D coach Rob Siechen said. “They're really physical, but she adjusted and played outstanding tonight.”

Goodrum had 14 of J-D’s 26 points in the first half, allowing the visitors to build a 10-point lead (26-16) going into the break.

By contrast, the Brothers (14-3, 12-1 league) didn’t tally its first points until nearly halfway through the first quarter, and finished the first period with just five points on two field goals.

Scoring leaders Marisa Romeo and Julie Cuomo hit their quotas with 18 and 16 points, respectively, but still, points were hard to come by for the Brothers.

“We had to get the defensive stops and not turn the ball over,” said Siechen. “We did a great job defensively.”

In the third quarter, the Rams quickly stretched its lead out to 17, but led by Romeo, CBA made a 12-5 run and cut the advantage back to 10.

A pair of free throws by Cuomo brought the Brothers within seven at 48-41, but it would get no closer.

“It might not get bigger in the area,” said Siechen of the J-D/CBA rivalry. “We're so close, everybody knows each other, we've been going against each other for years.”

The Rams round up the season when it hosts Fowler on Tuesday, on the same night that CBA travels to Mexico, a day before the girls Section III playoff pairings are announced.
