“Playbook” is much like “Moonstruck,” a film with surprising charm and native character. Both have simple narratives in tight, enclosed environments with urban roots; both have great scripts with wonderful acting and exchanges between the principals. I liked this film for a lot of reasons beyond its technical competence. Cooper is at the hub of a terrific supporting cast, and he has wonderful chemistry with both Lawrence and Robert de Niro who plays his father. Cooper is very good; de Niro and Lawrence are exceptional — the movie is so much better when Lawrence is in the scene, and she, alone, is worth the price of a ticket. I highly recommend this film and urge anyone with joy in their heart to see it soon.
