LCSD holds informational meeting for parents

— Registered key fobs are required to gain access to entrances during school hours. Once a key fob is used, a computer record is automatically registered through Raptor Visitor Management Software.

Raptor is also used to screen visitors for criminal records.

“It was good to hear about what’s being done in terms of point of entry issues,” said parent Nicole Hotaling. “But I did want to know if the district was even entertaining the idea of armed personnel, because I am not in favor of that.”

Yet unlike Hotaling, the vast majority of parents present at the meeting expressed a need for armed personnel on school grounds.

“I expect more security for our children,” said Elizabeth Diaz. “I came to vocalize that there should be an armed officer at the main entrance of each building at least… that would have prevented what happened at Sandy Hook.”

Johns said he believes the issue of gun possession among school security is a debate for the community.

“I have not heard a convincing argument for guns in schools,” he said. “There is a national debate going on and it does not seem like this is something unique to our school at this point in time.”
