Movies for children

This February, the Children's Room at Beaver Lake Nature Center becomes a movie theater for nature videos at 3:45 p.m. every Monday afternoon. Elementary-age children can watch a different 25- to 45-minute film each week. Due to the size of the room, pre-registration is required. Each child must be accompanied by an adult during the movie. FREE

Field Guide Series

At 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, Beaver Lake will offer an in-depth look into winter birds. During this program, a part of Beaver Lake Nature Center's Field Guide Series, a naturalist will highlight the winter survival strategies of birds and the best of winter bird watching. $5; registration required.

Raised-Bed Rose Gardens

Beaver Lake Nature Center hosts the Gardeners in Thyme for a program on Raised-Bed Rose Gardens at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7. The speaker, Whitney Mills, is a member of the Syracuse Rose Society. In addition to discussing the process of building a raised-bed rose garden, Mills will also elaborate on rose selection, planting, protecting and fertilizing. At 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, visitors can come to Beaver Lake Nature Center for a relaxing evening of wine tasting. Each guest will enjoy some basic food pairings, tasting notes, a raffle and the expertise of wine expert Gary Decker from Vinomania in Syracuse. Tickets are $50 per person and must be purchased in advance.

Lunar New Years

On Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 9 and 10, Beaver Lake Nature Center will celebrate the Lunar New Year as the new moon marks the beginning of the New Year for Asia. From noon to 4 p.m., visitors are invited to stop inside the nature center to learn something new about the moon, its phases and how it affects the animals around Beaver Lake. Also during those hours, children can visit the lunar craft table and half-moon cookies will be for sale from the Friends of Beaver Lake.
