Skaneateles girls hockey falls in sectional final shootout

Alexandria Bay denies Lakers berth in state final four

— When 50-plus minutes of OT were complete and the game was still 0-0, it went to a three-round shoot-out, most goals wins.

With the first turn, Allison Weiss pushed the puck past Rios, and the Lakers led 1-0. Alex Bay's Sydney Aubertine answered, going up top to beat Lupo.

The shoot-out was 1-1, and stayed that way through the second round as Rios stopped Riley Donahue and Lupo denied the Purple Ghosts' Mikayla Kolb.

In the decisive third round, Rios made one more big save, holding off Sarah Sauda's attempt. Now, Alex Bay senior captain Jessica Prance got her turn, and waiting until the last possible moment, slid the puck past Lupo to give her team the victory.

Skaneateles finished its season at 10-4-2, a remarkable effort given that it had just one senior (defender Nora Garrett) on the roster. The return of everyone else, combined with the disappointment of how this season ended, could push the Lakers all the way to the top next winter.
