SYRACUSE Though the West Genesee girls indoor track and field team could only manage a fourth place finish in last Thursday’s CNY Counties League National division meet at SRC Arena, junior Laura Leff achieved plenty.
Leff, who was invited to compete in the Feb. 16 Millrose Games High School Mile at the Armory in New York City, was victorious in the 3,000-meter run in 10 minutes, 7.14 seconds, more than half a minute ahead of the field.
Later on, in the 4x800 relay, Leff joined Sarah Ferranti, Maria Matkoski and Mary McGlynn as the Wildcats earned the victory in 10:16.19, leaving Baldwinsville (10:23.46) more than seven seconds behind.
Brianna Richardson would win, too, as in the 55-meter hurdles she crossed the line in 9.20 seconds, with Cicero-North Syracuse’s Hannah Szumloz second in 9.44 seconds. Richardson added a third (34 feet ¼ inch) in the triple jump and a third in the high jump, clearing 4’9”.
Maureen McInerney got fourth place in the shot put, heaving it 30’7 ¾”. Matkoski emerged to gain fourth place in the 1,000-meter run in 3:21.32, while Ferranti was fifth in the 1,500-meter run (5:26.58) and Nicole Paone took sixth in the 600-meter run. WG was fourth in both the 4x400 (4:33.60) and 4x200 (1:59.04) relays.
Going to the OHSL Liberty/Patriot division meet, Westhill/Bishop Ludden finished third, with 52 points, while Marcellus got 31 points for sixth place and Jordan-Elbridge (26 points) was seventh.
For Marcellus, Rachel Garn earned a victory in the 1,500 in a clocking of 5:03.66 and moved on to the 1,000, where she needed 3:05.90 to beat Fabius-Pompey’s Erin McConnell by 3.37 seconds. Molly McGuane was fourth in the 600 (1:52.39) and Abby Fallon was sixth in the 55 sprint. Keelin Kelly added a fifth in the long jump.
Like Garn, Brianna Byrnes gave J-E a pair of victories. Alone, Byrnes rolled to first place in the 600 in 1:45.25, topping Cazenovia’s Samantha Gates (1:47.52) by 2.27 seconds.
