Caz hockey rescues third at Cortland-Homer Tournament

Late rally helps Lakers prevail in close consolation game

After the calendar turned to 2014, the Lakers were set to go to Cicero Twin Rinks the Cicero-North Syracuse Optimist Tournament, but the cold temperatures caused a postponement of Friday’s opening-round game against Syracuse.

Instead, the two met in a single game on Saturday, also at the Twin Rinks, and the Lakers never got on the board in a 4-0 defeat to the Cougars.

Ryan McCann took his turn in the net for Cazenovia, and did a solid job, recording 33 saves. But the Lakers never relieved the pressure on McCann, taking just 13 shots overall, and Syracuse gradually got away as Ryan Lehrer, Mitch Laffin, Sean Eccles and Matt Mastro had one goal apiece.

Having fallen to 2-5-2, the Lakers are back home at the Morrisville State IcePlex on Tuesday to face defending state Division II champion CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt before a Friday-night visit to Auburn.
