County residents can save on prescriptions with Pro-Act card

— Onondaga County is one of the counties across 10 states that has committed to helping lower prescription drug costs for underinsured residents. Onondaga County’s relationship with the Pro-Act Prescription Discount card began in 2007. Since then, residents have saved more than $21 million on prescription drugs. The goal of the program is to ensure that Onondaga County residents with little or no prescription drug coverage can obtain their medications at a reasonable price.

The Onondaga County discount card program can be used on brand name or generic prescriptions. The average savings on brand name prescriptions is 10 to 20 percent, and the savings on generic medications ranges from 20 to 70 percent. This discount card can even be used towards certain dental, vision and LASIK services, as well as on pet medications when these prescriptions are filled at the pharmacy instead of the veterinarian’s office. These cards are accepted at more than 60,000 pharmacies nationwide. This program has been made available to uninsured and underinsured county residents at no cost to the county taxpayers or the recipients since it is offered and administered by a commercial third party.

Even if you have prescription coverage, you may still be able to use the card on prescriptions that are not covered by your insurance. If you would like to receive one of these cards, please contact me at 944-0716 and I will send one to you, or you can print your own card at ProAct’s website at NYRxDiscountCard.com.

John Dougherty represents the second district in the Onondaga County Legislature, which includes the western portion of the town of Clay. John welcomes constituent feedback and can be contacted at 944-0716.
