Skaneateles girls cross country runners relax after a tough summer workout in a local cemetery. The Lakers open its season Sept. 7 at the East Syracuse-Minoa Invitational with high hopes of winning its first Section III title in six years.
continued Also pushing for a spot on the varsity are junior Jennifer DeRosa, sophomore Finan Malcolm and junior Elsa Soderberg. “All three are perfectly capable of hitting a home run,” declared Reed, “and we think that on any given day, they can be formidable.”
Also pushing hard and opening the eyes of the coaching staff are seniors Alex Clark, Ginny Hamlin and Maria Schillace, who have been on the team for years. Sophomores Molly Stanton, Jillian Van Leer and Makena Gorman are all rookie additions to the roster and are improving steadily.
Junior Maggie McNeil has returned to the team and has logged some good mileage over the summer.
The team opens next weekend at the 22nd East Syracuse-Minoa Invitational where they will compete with the defending national champions from Fayetteville-Manlius, along with state-ranked contenders Jamesville-Dewitt and the host ESM Spartans. Defending sectional champ Tully will help make opening day a competitive grind.
